stinky water

So my tank really smells right now... it was fine untill yesterday when i added live sand but now it stinks pretty bad. Is this a sign of a cycle? I got the LR i have in there (which is only about 3lbs in a 10 gal tank) from the LFS where i got my water so there shouldnt be any curing because it went stright from their tank to my tank. Any ideas/suggestions?

i just checked and my ammonia has got up to .5 from 0 which is what it was at 2 dayss ago... so im guessing there will be a cycle, but should this smell?

Yes. It's a little of both the LS & LR. Just because the LR is in a holding tank ant the LFS doesn't mean they cured it. It may still have stuff dieing off on it. You'll go through a cycle, just do your 10% water changes each month and give the tank time. You'll be fine.

This is normal. There really isn't anything you can do about it that wouldn't just prolong the cycle.

Run carbon to reduce the smell from the die-off.
