As seen in the picture....I dont trust the plastic hose. Can I just use PVC pipe fittings to screw onto the bulkheads or has anyone done this?

I have the same type of hose on my discharge and it works just fine. Yes you can use PVC just try and not use 90's if possible as they can restrict flow.

It feels as if the hose wants to fall off the bulkhead on the tank...how did you secure it?

I have a PVC nipple connected to bulkhead and the hose is slid over the nipple for a tight fit. I did install a hose clamp for a "just in case" measure.

Ok so I went ahead and got some clamps for the fittings...I got a Mag #5 for my 72G tank and got the ball valve installed...When the water flows from the overflow into the sump to the sock it is realllllly loud...is there some kind of silencer that someone has found? Also on that pump there is a clear line that comes from the output nipple....what is that used for? Check out pics
