On a curing LR

I've noticed this little spec of red color started showing up few days ago and it seems to be getting bigger (not much, but bigger) everyday. I thought it was just some red "stuff" from the LR. When I take the picture on the side, it is actually a 3D structure. What could it be?

Poke it with something. Is it soft and does it retract back into the rock? Or is it hard and does it stay still?

I can't remember what they are really called, but they are sometimes referred to as fire coral. They are harmless and you'll probably see a bunch of them popping up all over your rock soon enough.

Yeah it hurts if you touch it though. Every time I handle my rocks with my bare hands I get burns, rashes and cuts all over them.

That also been bothering my fingers lately. Little cuts and rubbed raw areas after I have my hands in the tank for a long time cleaning. I got some rubber finger guards at Office Max (for paper cuts) to put on my finger tips for the next time I do a cleaning. Hope it works.

The best things ever are the plastic gloves that go up to your armpits. Unfortunately, in my tank, I can't even reach near the bottom without going above my armpits.

I always just put on my wetsuit and chainmaille when it's cleaning time at my house. Can't ever be too safe with bristle worms and fire coral...
