Loud Skimmer

R3verb

Time to add some coral!
Hey guys, I'm sure this is just me being a pain in the butt BUT, I got a Reef Dynamics INS80 skimmer yesterday, got it home and set it up. What I have noticed though is that now my sump is a little loud for my taste. I was running just a Quite One sump pump and it was dead quite, maybe just a little hum. Now its a LEAST double the db. Is there a good way to quite down my sump/skimmer/pump? Any help would be great!

Is it loud because it's rattling against the bottom of the sump? Many pumps have a place where you can attach suction cups to the bottom. If not, you can buy a piece of foam (like the boards that gardeners use to kneel) and place the pump on the foam to quiet it.

It is sitting on rubber feet right now but it looks like I can flip those over and use the suction cups on the other side. Should I do that? Also, I was thinking about building a little egg crate stand for it so I can get a little more water in the sump. Will that help with noise at all?

You cant tell while its running. The best thing to do is pull the impeller out and recheck its cleanliness. If possible put it back together under water. If not possible put it together and set it in the sump then pour water into the output port of the pump. Then attach the hose or pvc. I deal with all kinds of pumps for work and see issues like this all the time.
