How do Corals work?

Im curious and im new to this hobby. Before I start on this hobby I must know how they work and know really what they are. Can some one please explain to me what they are. My guess is that they are like saltwater plants but are kind of animals because some use there tentacles to capture food. Your replies will be very much appreciated!

Ok, so here goes. Corals are an animal. They have a symbiotic relationship with a type of algae that photosynthesizes light from the sun and feeds the corals. That is the short of it. Read around in the articles section and maybe pick up the book in my signature. Its a good place to start. You can learn a lot from this site if you put in the reading time.
