Fragging a Shroom

My mushroom has grown like crazy and is almost touching a lil baby torch that sprang out of the rock. As I have multiple torches I am not sure who its Mama was. I need to frag the shroom before it wars with the torch.

The shroom is wedged in a rock hole. Can I just yank it out or will doing this injure the shroom?

I am going to put the shroom on a cutting board and cut it exactly into four pieces, making sure I leave a little mouth on each frag. I'll use one of these:

I'll put each frag back in a little hole where it is likely to take root. I've never fragged a coral. Am I on the right track with this?

Can you cut the shroom out with your exacto knife instead of yanking it out? That would be the best solution so you don't have to damage it as much. If not, then pull it out and cut away. If there is any of the foot left on the rock it should grow into a new shroom for you as well. Good luck!

Watch my coral fragging videos.

To cut a shroom off a rock, simply use a sharp exacto and gently cut and saw the foot tissue off as close to the rock as possible. Don't be scared - you're going to have at least 2 mushrooms on this rock in 4 weeks.

Take the entire mushroom and lay it down on a flat, hard surface. Line up your exacto and cut that sucker into pie shaped wedges. Take care to get a little piece of the center mouth in each piece. 4 quarters is usually easy. Or just slice it in half. Whatever - they are tough.

Now take the pieces and put them into some kind of container with a bunch of rock rubble and crushed coral. Maybe cover the top with a media bag - the kind used for carbon socks and phosphate remover. Available at Foster Smith for a couple bucks. They need water circulation, but it can't be blowing too hard or they will float out.

It'll take a solid 4 - 6 weeks before they are all attached to a piece of rock. Leave em in there for at least 8-10 weeks. They aren't going to outgrow a tupperware container in 2 months.

Run a little carbon for the first 2 or 3 days after fragging. They tend to melt and lose a little tissue - as well as some of their guts - when you slice them open. The carbon will take care of it. Run it 2 or 3 days and toss it in the trash.
