Filter pad in sump?

I am wondering if you guys use a filter pad in your sump? Where the water dumps into my sump there is a spot to put those white of blue filter pads. I have been replacing the pad in mine about weekly or biweekly and it usually looks pretty dirty. Does that pad help reduce nitrates? Or does it make it worse?

it helps get the crap out of the water and as long as you change it offten it will not lead to nitrate problems.

I think the key is to clean or replace it often.

Yep, they do a great job of filtering out the big stuff that can hurt the clarity of your water. As long as you clean them off or replace them often, it won't do any harm.

Yep I run a filter sock in my sump/refug... helps reduce bubbles and big stuff :)
