dsb question

If I'm using dry sand in my fuge as a dsb...how long will it take to start to reduce nitrates?

I would get rid of the deep sand bed and run it bare with some chaeto in it. IMO will save you headaches or potential problems later..:D

Plus is can take months for an oxygen free zone to be created and then colonized by the de-nitrifing bacteria. But put in a macro algae and it starts working right away, and its much safer.

Months...to never. I ran a very large DSB (about a 55 gallon tank's worth) for my old 240 gallon tank. I don't think it made a difference. The sand should be at least 6 inches deep if you want to try, though.
