Reefing newb
Added a pretty large piece of rock to my tank today and just noticed what looks like a certain kind of growth on the side of it. Any ideas?

That's dead coral skeleton. I don't see any living flesh on it. It's just part of the rock.

Looks like white sponge, if it was exposed to air it will die. I had that on my rock when I first got it but it ended up dying.

Well it was exposed when they took it out of the tank and put it in the bag.

It took mine several weeks to die off and it was a brand new tank so my ammonia and nitrates got kind of high so that probably didnt help. Hopefully yours will do ok sponges are good if that is what you are talking about.
You do mean the white fluffy looking stuff and not the hard dead coral right? Where did the picture go???

I see the pictures. No, I was actually talking about the dead coral. I'm not sure what the whitish stuff is. I have it on a couple other rocks also. I just figured it was maybe a dead part of the rock that would eventually turn to coraline. My other ones which were white are going green now and I can see my coraline is spreading slowly.
