Alright, so I'm looking at some amazing acans/favias online, and I'm stuck. IS it worth burning the money on these corals if I'm shutting down my tank mid-September for deployment?
The upside: I could grow them out and resell them by then (although 5 months isn't much time for much growth)
and I am potentially going to foster them out to interested people during my deployment.

Downside: I spend money I could be spending on the new tank when I get back...

You most likely won't make your money back in that short a time. You don't know anyone that can maintain your tank while your gone? There are also services that will go to your house and top it off and do weekly water changes etc. If your going to be gone for a long deployment that could be very costly though.

I don't think I'll make my money back either, so that's looking out of the question. I have had a few people offer to take in my corals (and in exchange they could frag the piss out of them and even keep the main colony, as long as I just got a frag back)

Yeah, it'll be a year deployment, then the time it will take for me to get a 150 gal up and running. And I'm even considering a move to another state! So it's a little crazy. Don't think it will be worth it for a tank sitter! (I need a house sitter first, ha!) If my newly retired parents can't watch the house, I might just pay a service to do basic maintenance for the year on the house) Either way, I can't imagine anyone I know to both watch the house AND care for the tank.

John, Ware is just at the southern tip of the Quabbin Reservoir, about 20 minutes North of Springfield.

yea yea, alright...you guys have stalled my purchase....for now. Not too concerned about making my money back as much as not throwing the money away.

I would more then willing to take them, I have no desire to frag them or anything. I dont even know where to begin with fragging, and I dont even they are going to fit into my tank anyways. If you decide to grab them and need a safe haven for them let me know....

haha, John I appreciate it! I might have to take you up on that in September. Fragging is easy and a good skill to learn, it will really help you expand your coral base.

I plan on trying to send my corals off to different people, so, like Biff said, as to not put all my eggs in one basket.

I am just not interested in fragging right now.... still learning as much as can right now on corals care specific requirements, and what the best balance for my tank

I'd save the money and not invest more into a hobby before a deployment.

I'll take care of any corals for anybody - 'cept SPS corals. I seam to kill those pretty fast. :grumble:

No problem just give me heads up and will personally come pick them up. Company pays for all my fuel so driving is free, sorta minus my time...

Won't be til this fall, so I've got some time left!
I'm going to be starting a thread this summer with pics of what corals need homes. Kind of like an adopt a pet thing!

People keep saying they wouldn't want to frag them, but I'd definitely insist!

Well I dont want to do it myself for I dont have the expertise to do it and most likely end up killing them. When you get back and come retrieve your corals and I have grown to like them then I would not mind excepting a frag for it.

I CAN frag any coral - I think. But I just wouldn't want to take a guys nice 6x8 colony of mummy eye chalice, lord acans or birdsnest and hack it all to shit. It just seams wrong to do that to a nice coral.

But hey - if you insist, gimme the smallest piece with 1 or 2 polyps and thank you very very much.
