Coral plugs are ugly :*(

What do you guys do with the frag plugs? They're unsightly to say it nicely. What happens to them as the corals grow? Are you supposed to break them from the plug and glue them on the rock or how does it work?

Just wedge the frag plug into a crack and let the coral grow out around it. The coral will grow out around the plug and completely cover it in 2 or 3 months, so it's safest to just find a crack or hole in the rocks and wedge it in there. You can use thick super glue (cyanoacrylate glue or sometimes called Cee Ayy) to glue the plug to the rocks if you wish. The glue will instantly skin over on top when it hits the salt water, but just press it into the rock and the skin will break and the glue will ooze out. No big deal. The glue is safe for your tank and will cure in less than 5 minutes under water.

You can take a pair of pliers and chip a bit off the edges if you want, but you risk breaking the plug and damaging the coral or polyps. I prefer just finding a spot and placing it in the tank. In time the plug will be nothing but a memory.

Good luck!!

+2 Rc great advice. I would add that if I am the one attaching the frag then I use a small piece of rock or rubble. If the frag isn't attached real well sometimes I will remove it and reattach it to a piece of rock.

Can you glue the plugs perpendicular to the rock? My tank is a tall, and the rock is built straight up so there isn't much for ledges to place plugs.

Can I just glue stuff coming straight out? Any corals I should avoid doing this with?

In two weeks if all is doing well I am going to get some lps. Probably bubble coral.

One last question. How far apart do you need to separate aggressive corals? How much room do you leave for growth?

perpendicular: If you can get the plug stable yes. But they usually would need some support from underneath.

Bubble coral: I would avoid at first until your tank is mature. They are simular to an anemone. I would start with softies, i.e. leathers, mushrooms, zoos, polyps, etc...

aggressive corals: I would space them anywhere from 5-6 inches apart. If they get overgrown then you could frag them and sell them to your LFS for credit or just trim them back.

+1 David
Though some of the aggressive LPS like torches and frogspawns and Galaxeas will need even more room.I've seen sweepers that was close to 12" long on those.
