May 1, 2009 #1 Cosmocraig Reefing newb Just changed from crushed coral to sand. Sand is getting a brown crust on it is this algae? Should I do anything about it or let it run its course?

May 1, 2009 #3 bobby I like to do bad things. It's diatoms or cyno. Both come with a new tank and go away in time with normal water changes and good husbandry. Very annoying and ugly, but completely normal.

May 1, 2009 #4 Smitty Reef pro +1 Bobby, that is just diatoms on the sand...which is normal...it will go away in a few days.
May 1, 2009 #5 Bifferwine I am a girl Diatom outbreaks are normal, and as your tank matures, they'll become less and less frequent.
