Algae

I'm starting to get this really ugly brown algae on 2 of my rocks, which Im guessing is diatom algae. Is there ANY way to get rid of this stuff, i was hoping for that pretty purple algae :(

If it is indeed a diatom bloom, then it will most likely subside by itself. If it is a cyanobacteria bloom, then you may need to take action. Can you post pictures?

There you go :)

Cant say for sure from the pic.But the purplish could be coralline.
If its slimy and wipes off easy, its cyano-bacteria.If its hard, its coralline.

mostly likely yes, you will have a lot of coraline...

You;re lucky you only have diatoms because its very easy to clean especially off the glass. Just wait until the hard green stuff shows up and outlines every single scratch on your glass...:D

Its a normal part of the hobby so dont worry.

Few things to keep in mind for reducing the algae:

- Dont use tap water (use RO or distilled water)
- Do consistent weekly/bi-weekly water changes. However a few weeks, i would up the water changes to x 2 per week (smaller water changes)
- Make sure you have decent water flow
- Remove as much of the algae as possible before each water change
- Use less light for a few weeks
- Use phosphate remover for a few weeks

Thanks :)

-I do use distilled
-My tanks still cycling and apparently if i have ammonia and nitrites I shouldn't do a water change
-I have a good flow :)
-Will do
-Didn't know that would help thanks :)
-I'll pick some up tomorow :)
lol :p

Since your tank is still cycling, just be patient and WAIT!!! Your tank will be just fine with a little bit of algae -- we all go through it in the beginning!
