Bio balls arent really good for salt tanks the become nitrate factories. Sponges also have to be rinsed weekly or they become nitrate factories. I have live rock and cheato in my sump, no socks no sponges....really basic, water comes in to the skimmer section, then the refugium with live rock...

Is it possible that the gasket is binding when you tighten it? I had that issue on a hob refuguim. What I did was used a little vegetable oil to lube the gasket. That worked for me.

That is one reason I run a hob filter all the time on my tank. So easy to run carbon also. Some people dont like the look but It doesnt bother me.
