Should deconstruct my live rock to look for a dead fish?

+1 everyone....25ppm of nitrates?? Pshaw! Mine have survived through 160ppm for months before ;) I believe Bifferwine even had her fish living in her old neglected tank with nitrates up to 200ppm or something ridiculously high. It's not good long term, I'm sure, but it's mainly the inverts...

    Diatoms driving me insane!

Tap has minerals and metals that don't show up in our tests. I suggest you get distilled water from Walmart, or just go ahead and get an RODI.

Ah, tap water....that would have been my next suggestion. :)

    Diatoms driving me insane!

Did you have this diatom problem before changing out the substrate? Because it does sound like you're going through new tank syndrome.. Maybe try to do daily water changes after you scrub down the tank and suction up whatever algae you can get out. You can also try running carbon, I think...

    Diatoms driving me insane!

How recently? Stirring up the coral/sand to take it out would definitely cause a spike. If anything, your tank is probably cycling again. We need more info in this thread as to what you've tried, what your parameters are, your stocking, how often you feed, etc. Try switching to frozen for a...

How long will it take for live sand to clear?

A true deep sand bed is like 10". But in any case, either keep it stirred to keep the gunk from building up, or try not to stir it up too much once it's cycled. When you're cycled, add a ton of nessarius. And maybe eventually get a sand sifting star once your tank's all settled.

    What's wrong with this fish?

Could be just scraped from the rocks; dodging you while you were cleaning. Just watch it to make sure it doesn't get any worse...then it could have become infected. Just make sure she's eating.

How long will it take for live sand to clear?

Ah, yeah, if it's live don't rinse. You can run a skimmer. It should help clear it up. But like I said, I just left mine alone, and it cleared up on its own.

    Just starting out

+2 Mario -- your tank size depends on what kind of fish you want, since some fish require larger systems. I started with a 45g, but realized I wanted larger fish like tangs and a foxface...they require 90+g....so I got a 125g. Go to liveaquaria.com and do fish searches and check out their...

How long will it take for live sand to clear?

Did you rinse it? It took my sand in my 125g a few days to clear up, and that's after I had rinsed the crap out of it.

If it's dinoflagellates, check out this thread: https://www.livingreefs.com/dinoflagellates-another-form-cyanobacteria-t43438.html They did complete blackouts and daily water changes. Is it a 29g? If so, at leat your water changes should be easy (I have a 125g w/ a 65g sump...water changes...

    Hi I'm John

Welcome to the site! How did you acclimate the snails/crabs? They're very sensitive to changes. Plus it's possible, the lfs probably sold you bad batches of inverts. It happens. Next time you get more, try to drip acclimate them for a couple of hours if you didn't do that already. Also...

    Long time issues...

If those are dinos like Brian suggests, you're in for a tough fight. If it's snotty, it's possible it's dinos. If it's not dinos, how long since you've changed your RODI cartridges? How old are the lights?
