Emerald Mithrax crab spawned in my tank

While doing my random nighttime flashlight inspection of the tank, I saw one of the emerald mithrax crabs releasing larvae into the water. At first it was releasing several dozen babies each time it flapped the plate on its underside. By the time I got back with my camera, it was almost done and...

    Bad salt mix

From my experience with RSCP, if you exceed the saturation point it ends up precipitating stuff and your solution ends up all wrong. Next time, produce your target RO/DI water volume first and then slowly add the salt mix. I have heard that a long time ago at school in one of the classes, I...

    Zoanthus sp.

There have been several confirmed cases of reef keepers (or their children, or pets) getting serious injuries due to exposure to zoanthid/palythoa toxins. The potency of the toxins vary depending on the species, but it is better to be on the safe side. Here is another recent case, from another...

    ZyberGobys 90 build has begun!!!

So are you going to attach everything to the PVC frame and then lift the whole assembly into the tank? Or are the bigger rocks not glued to the PVC?

    Tank Water is Foggy

The sand usually has particles too small to be filtered. You might need to do a water change to remove most of the free-floating particles.

    Rockstacker's 120g Build

The power supply is a 3-stage setup. 1. AC/DC Adapter plugs into the AC supply. 2. DC output from the adapter plugs into the wavemaker controller. 3. Wavemaker sends between 12v to (just under) 24v to the pump depending on the desired speed. So if you are planning that type of mod, then you...

    Another ID needed...Carpet this time

My ocellaris clownfish got too close to my maxi mini (about 3 inches diameter) and he got stung. He was wriggling for a few seconds. I think the sting was too strong for his tolerance. The poor guy never made a second attempt. I am not sure if other maxi minis can host other clowns, but at...

    testing kits

For a tank that small, I would do a 10 gallon water change when a fish dies - specially since you do not have a skimmer. On a regular basis I would think that a 5 gallon water change every week would suffice, unless you are overstocked. This is not set in stone, and you will need to gauge the...

    Live Rock

That guy might have a different understanding of what live rock is. In terms of colonization by beneficial bacteria that will act as biological filter, this process could take days or weeks depending on how the "cycle" was done. It may take years for a piece of dry rock to be naturally...

    Evaporation and Humidity

It depends on your RO/DI unit. Taking a 75GPD system for example (the most commonly used kit): 75 gallons per day (24 hours) = 3.125 gallons per hour. So this unit would make 9.375 gallons of RO/DI water in 3 hours. That is what it would produce "on paper". There will be variations based on...

    Longnose Butterflies

It did not touch the corals, but I had all soft corals at the time. I also had peppermint and skunk cleaner shrimps and those were ignored. In my case it looks like it zeroed in on the scallops.

    testing kits

You will find that it would be the case for most test kits that use color comparison sheets. There are certain shades of colors that I could not even tell apart with those kits. Titration kits would be a good alternative as the sample water changes significantly from start and end point...

    Longnose Butterflies

I had one before - unfortunately I had a dozen flame scallops in the tank too. They use those long snouts to pick at the muscles at the base of the scallop's hinge. Once the muscle was torn, it was able to open the scallop and eat it.

    High Calcium

API liquid kits, while not the "best" are leaps better than test strips. The reason test strips can be so inaccurate is that the reagents infused in the paper tend to have very short shelf life. So you could be getting accurate readings for a few weeks then suddenly go off-scale afterwards.

Signed up for Xenia, got something else too.

Looks like they will be nice blue zoanthids too. You can set a small rock right against the zoa colony and let it spread to that rock. This way you can eventually have a separate zoa colony without worrying about the ones left on the original rock that the xenia might choke out.

    High Calcium

What test kit are you using? You had another thread where you are using test strips. Are you using test strips for Calcium too? Paper test strips generally have bad resolution so they could be off by as much as 50 points or more. I would recommend that you do not try to make any adjustments to...
