    jebao wp 25

I have a WP-40 on my 6-foot tank and I have it toned down to 75%. I used to have it down to 50% but I moved things around and now 75% is working out great. 100% is just too strong for my tank though. I will probably get a WP-25 and set it on the opposite end of the tank so I can provide another...

Red Sea Reef Foundation Test Kit - Old and New Kits have different readings

Yeah I have run at least three tests on old and new kit. Both kits had consistent results. The new kit always registered higher values (too high) compared to the old kit. I got a response from Red Sea about the calcium test. The lot# I had for the Calcium-B reagent (lot# 2103) is recalled and...

Red Sea Reef Foundation Test Kit - Old and New Kits have different readings

Has anyone run into this before? I have been using the Red Sea Reef Foundation test kit for many months now. I'm about to run out of reagents so I bought a new kit. I then tested my water using the two different kits to see if they provide similar readings (they should, right?) My tank...

Adding top off water, Is a buffer needed?

I used that portable API Tap Water Purifier/Filter (TWP) in the past. It is basically a standalone DI chamber, with no prefilters whatsoever. Although it can reduce your water's TDS to low values, it cannot compare to the performance of a full RO/DI setup. Problems with that filter: 1...

Quick Cycle with lots of mature live rock?

I would check for nitrite. The presence of nitrate is an indication that nitrite is being processed, but is no guarantee that all of them are being processed.

    Zoanthus sp.

I cannot speak for other reef keepers, but I do not quarantine corals. I only do a 10 minute dip and then rinse before adding them to the display tank. Zoas can be attached using superglue.

    Xenia

For soft corals, you would have better success with MitchReef's suggestion. Glue is almost impossible with soft corals. And rubber bands/fishing lines are iffy. I have tried that on several softies and they either managed to wiggle out (not tight enough) or they ended up splitting (too tight).

    Zoanthus sp.

I have only used Coral RX and it works great. If you go with this brand, it comes in several concentrations so do read the instructions carefully. The sucky thing with dipping is that it does not distinguish between good and bad hitchhikers. But those casualties must be accepted in order to...

    Mysis shrimp babies

Cannibalism amongst mysis is common in a breeding setup, where the densities are beyond natural levels. In a reef tank, the mysis are more likely to be eaten by the fish before they could cannibalize each other. I do not even see that kind of adult density in my tank (referring to your video)...

    Copper Penny paly problem

If Mitch is right and this is one of the more toxic variants, then it would probably be best to keep this out of circulation. It is ironic that zoanthids and palythoas are considered among the best "starter" corals, yet some can pose to be the most lethal.

Something is wrong with my coral

Well, first it was in an upside-down tank, then it moved to a sideways tank. So that could be the problem... J/K. :) Assuming you have good water parameters, all leathers do this as they acclimate to a new environment. Some leathers can take a few days, while some could even take weeks. My long...

    Mysis shrimp babies

More spawning action in my reef tank. Perhaps the cooling weather has convinced my inverts to start getting in the mood :) You can only see the baby shrimps that are reflecting the flashlight, but they were everywhere. I wonder how my fish will react when they wake up in the morning.

How Vital is RO/DI water for a Reef Tank?

Is that 40psi coming out of the booster pump before it even hits any of the RO equipment? 40psi even with a booster pump is kinda low. I would talk to RO/DI vendors and see if you have any other options of maximizing the efficiency of the RO membrane. Maybe you can get a tighter flow...

    Oily Layer of Surface

This oily layer is the organic waste buildup that is attracted to the interface between air and water. This is the exact same waste that should be processed out via skimmer. The issue might be that your skimmer has it's intake tube too deep and is actually under the water surface. It should be...

How Vital is RO/DI water for a Reef Tank?

10:1 waste to product ratio is on the very low end of today's equipment. The typical 75GPD units these days have a ratio closer to 4:1 at 55psi. With higher water supply pressure and an additional membrane conversion kit, you could further enhance the ratio. Wastewater is a part of the RO/DI...

    RO/DI Filters

The top cartridge is for the RO membrane. The vertical cartridges are the pre-filters. 1.Water goes through the pre-filter cartridges first. 2. Then through the RO membrane. 3. Then through the DI cartridge. Most of the refillable pre-filter canisters have a standard size. Usually 5" or 10"...

    oxygen

Are you observing any symptoms of oxygen deficiency in the tank? As long as you have sufficient water movement (those two powerheads in a 30 gal is enough) and you have sufficient water surface area there should be no issues with oxygen in the water. Conversely, those same mechanisms also cause...

How Vital is RO/DI water for a Reef Tank?

Having the following optional add-ons would make it easier to determine when to replace what. 1. Pressure gauge after the prefilters / before the RO membrane - A drop on water pressure at this stage compared to your usual supply pressure indicates that the prefilters are clogged and are...

How Vital is RO/DI water for a Reef Tank?

RO/DI water will have nothing else but water. These are the benefits, and you decide if they are worth it. 1. You are starting with a known quantity when it comes to mixing your salt. This gives you better control of what you wish to add to the mix. 2. This also eliminates the possibility of...
