Kalkwasser dosing: Alk dropping, Calcium and Magnesium holding.

First, a little history: For a few months I was manually dosing the BRS 2-part solution and the parameters were doing fine during that time. Ca: 440-450ppm. Mg: 1440-1450ppm Alk: 7.0dkh. The Alk was a little lower than what I would like (I would prefer 8.0) but since I got the manual dosing...

    Trouble with mushroom coral

You can use a cheap light timer to control the lights so you do not have to manually turn them on and off. This will also give the corals the benefit of a consistent day/night transition. The T5 bulbs that you have, what kind are they? (color temperature, etc). While mushrooms are not that...

Red Sea test kit - question for those who use it.

The 1st stage of the Mg test is the tricky part. You have to stick to the "shake for 15 seconds per drop" of the first reagent. I have tried taking shortcuts in the past and the results were off by about 100-200 ppm.

Test Kits and There Syringes !!!

Easiest way to test the syringe: 1. Pull 2ml of water using the Salifert 2ml syringe and put it in a small cup. 2. Then pull that water from the cup using the Red Sea syringe. If the water does not line up, then one or both syringes are off.

    RO/DI Upgrade

As long as they both use 1/4" RO/DI tubing, it should work. The upgrade kit is basically just an extra membrane unit that you hook up to the existing membrane unit. The idea is to have the wastewater from the first membrane pass through the second membrane so the wastewater gets filtered again -...

    Fish Fight!

This is when I put the "Claw of the Gods" into play. I use the aquarium grabber to break up fights and remind them there is a bigger "fish" that they should be worried about.

Gpix's 5g EcoPico [No pics yet]

Just hook up the RODI unit at your GF's place and get a couple of 5 gallon water containers to fill up while you visit her :) 5 gallons will probably last you a week or more for the pico. The second 5 gallons is for water changes.

Gpix's 5g EcoPico [No pics yet]

Unless BRS changed their design, the auto shut off valve (ASOV) does not have the check valve built in. The ASOV is the white box thing with four connectors. Without the float valve, you can just shut off the main water input line and that will stop the entire unit - give or take a few ounces...

Gpix's 5g EcoPico [No pics yet]

Does that RO/DI kit already come with a check valve to make the float valve work? When I got my RO/DI kit from BRS it did not have a check valve included and I have to buy one when I bought the float valve. Without the check valve, the float valve will stop the product water from going into...

Red Sea test kit - question for those who use it.

When you use the titration kits for Ca, and Mg, do you record the readings as soon as the color changes? Or do you wait a few seconds to see if that color holds? This is what I have been experiencing lately with my test kit. For example, the Ca test: 1.When I start adding the titrant, the color...

    Coral frag discs?

For soft corals, you can use a fine chisel to scrape the surface of the frag disk under the flesh of the coral to remove them. The important thing is to scrape away the surface of the frag disk, and not cut the coral tissue itself. This will minimize stress on the coral when removing from a...
