d2mini's Epic Fantabulous New Reef Build

Wow. Even the frag tank gets an MP40 and Radions ! My main tank does not even have those :)

    Rockstacker's 50 gallon Frag Tank

Video update. I built a larger frag rack to maximize the tank's size. I also moved the mushroom frags into the tank inside small plastic cups filled with rubble. Once they attach to the rubble, I can move them out of the plastic cups and glue the rubble to larger rocks. Frag Tank Update -...

    algae after light change

The old lights might have been limiting the growth of algae despite having usable nitrates and phosphates. Now that you have upgraded to hardware that produce a different quality light, the underlying algae and cyanobacteria are probably thriving.

I got a Luck hitch hiker Don't know what though

Looks like a sponge of some sort. I also have a small neon green/yellow sponge growing at the bottom of a zoa frag rock in my frag tank. I'm not sure if that is the natural color, or if it got the color from the filter-feeder food that I put in the tank. I would think that the food based color...

water changes arent lowering nitrates... why?

With the biological filter established, it would be rare to get readings on ammonia and nitrite as they are processed through the bacterial assembly line almost as fast as they are produced. The only thing you can test are nitrates because they tend to build up faster than the system can...

    Brown crap on my coral!

Yes. Most colonial type LPS really just use the built up skeleton as a substrate to grow on. As they grow, they form the grooves and ridges that follow the polyps' shape, but they build up and leave the old layers of skeleton under them. There are exceptions to this, as some species form a...

LED dimming and resulting color temperature changes

Reading up on lighting in general (not just reefkeeping specific), there is information that the color temperature ratings (in Kelvin) for light sources are based on their maximum illumination. When those lights are dimmed by limiting the power source, then the color temperature changes in...

To those who say zoas are not predators...

Try telling that to this CBS... Actually this is just a CBS molt that landed on the zoas. I'm sure the zoas are yelling at the CBS right now. "Dude, your laundry... PLEASE!"

    Brown crap on my coral!

Try taking out the coral and do a coral dip. You may need to do it several times.

New goby is an escape artist!

They can sometimes jump over the railing, even if it is a couple of inches above the water line. It gets frustrating, especially if the fish already has a few practice runs under its belt. They get it down to a science. Put an impeller a few inches away from where the overflow water enters the...

    Brown crap on my coral!

Is it covering only that coral? or do you see it in other areas as well? If it is only on that coral then it could be brown jelly.

    A used metal halide fixture

14,000K will grow corals. Generally 10,000K to 20,000K will provide corals with the light they need. (Probably different species prefer different ranges within this spectrum) 14,000K puts you very close to median spectrum.

    Crazy looking Sea Star

Very nice! They look like they need to be eating 24/7 to maintain that body mass.

    Goniopora (?) retracted

After a few days of setting the lights back to the 40% / 20% setting, the polyps are again starting to extend. Right now they are only half as long as what they used to be, but I am taking it as a good sign. I guess this particular coral prefers the light to be no brighter than that. I...

    Goniopora (?) retracted

Yeah, the pH and Alk seem to be locked at those levels. I would rather have those than subject my tank to roller coaster parameters. I am dosing (below saturation) kalkwasser via timed aqualifter to supplement Ca and Alk, and manually dosing Mg as needed. I have tried the BRS 2-part solution...

    monkiboy's 265g build thread

Very nice. Does the rock have any internal bracing? or is it just one solid piece of ceramic?

Is this a good algae or not?

A lot of those are just the common nuisance micro algae strains that grow as certain nutrients become available as a new tank goes through its maturation process. Just keep your water parameters within nominal levels and these will go away eventually as they run out of their primary nutrients.

What is this ???? Film on rocks

They could be bacterial blooms. They come and go, depending on the presence of nutrients that they feed on. Are you doing any type of carbon dosing?

What is this worm like thing?

It does not look like a bristleworm. Also, bristleworms are not know to swim in the water. they crawl on surfaces but are not real swimmers.
