    first water change

Getting the trates closer to zero is ideal to control nuisance algae growth but you will not have any livestock issues at 10.

How to move to a larger tank

I like to use new sand or at the very least rinse the used sand very well. A lot of nasties can be trapped in the old sand. Using your existing rock and water will really help in not starting a cycle. If you do experience one it will be very minimal. I have done this many times without any...

Hi and welcome to Living Reefs! Your SG is good at 1.025-026. Get that water change done to get those nitrates down. Then add your clean up crew. Check out www.reefcleaners.org , John will hook you up. You will experience some algae blooms with a new setup. The brown is probably diatoms. Take...

    Nitrates won't go down!!

Hi and welcome to Living Reefs! What kit are you using to test? Have you tried testing with a different kit? The kits will go bad and give you false readings but if you are using that kit to test the LFS water and getting 0 this probably isn't the case here.

    Alright. What's this?

They look like lily pads but it is called Acetabularia. It is a type of macro algae.

    Unhealthy Polyps?

It is probably just a matter of getting acclimated to your new (which is brighter) light. Give them some time to adjust but if they continue not extending I would either shorten your photo period or provide a little shade to them until they get adjusted.

can black itch live in your tank without host

You have to run your display tank fallow (fish less) for about 2 months to get rid of ich. You must also take action with the fish you have in QT by either copper dosing or hyposalinity to kill the parasite. Then any future fish you purchase must in QT and treated or you risk reintroducing ich...

    Return Pump sizing

Like Mario said it depends a lot on what you are planning on keeping in the tank. I don't like rapids in the sump so I try to keep it around 3-5x in the sump and use powerheads in the display tank to achieve the higher turnover rates.

    Out and Back in

Hi Steve and welcome back to the hobby! Reef Octopus makes really good skimmers. Mine has definitely done a good job. Compact fluorescents will do alright with softies but that is pretty much it. Looks like you had a really nice tank before so there is no reason you won't be able to...
