Looks like it could be vermatid snail web possibly or some kind of bacterial bloom. The only times I've ever seen something like that myself was from a dying or damaged coral that oozed a mucous like substance.

You can remove it when your ammonia spikes, then monitor ammonia and nitrite. When both are zero, you should be good to go I have heard of people leaving it in until it completely disintegrates. Good luck and welcome to the forum.
