    Electric Float Switches

No, they are mechanical. Essentially your top-off water needs to be at a level higher than the float valve. When the float is open (water level low) gravity kicks in bringing water through a tube from your top off reservoir through the valve. IMO these seem less likely to fail as they are a...

    Vortec vs Tunze

They're very different in what they do. The tunze provide one continuous flow of water. The Vortech's use a built in computer to do a variety of flow patterns. Both provide good turbulent flow, but they are very different. Tunze came under fire a while back for grossly over-estimating their...

    What to start with?

Mushrooms, Zoanthids, Palythoa, Xenia, and Star Polyps are all good. Check out Beginner Corals: Corals Suitable for Beginners in Saltwater Aquariums for a good list.

    Electric Float Switches

A number of folks on the site use the AutoTopOff.com switch. Personally, I just use a float valve with a gravity fed top off. I like to keep things simple.

Newly acclimated Anthias laying on the sand

Both of the fish are alive so far still today, but haven't really left the rockwork...at least not when they can see me. I did see one eating PE Mysis from his hole in rock.

    coral order

They look very red and red can lead to algae blooms. I'd stick to LED Array's designed with the light qualities needed for Reef Aquaria.

    Identify plz

Zoas are a great beginner coral, but do be careful about buying corals (or any other livestock) that you haven't researched before hand. At the very least bookmark LiveAquaria.com on your phone so that you can do a quick read up on whatever you want to buy before making a big mistake and wasting...

    Abiotic Precipitate in the Sandbed

I'm essentially seeing 3.7 dKh drop in Alk for a 20 ppm drop in Calcium daily. I should be seeing about a 2.8 dKh drop for that amount of calcium. Even that though, seems really really high for a 100 gallon water volume...

    Abiotic Precipitate in the Sandbed

I've certainly got SPS corals, a couple of colonies and a few frags but they absorb calcium and alk at 10ppm Ca to 1.4 dkh of Alk ratio. I'm not seeing the requisite drop in Calcium that I am seeing in Alkalinity.

    Abiotic Precipitate in the Sandbed

I'm following the red sea coral pro growth program, which has the Alk target at 12.6. What's interesting is that I am not get precipitate on my heaters or pumps. Its just these clumps in the sand bed. I've got nassarius snails, and you can see the path through the sand that they take.

    "re-cycle" micron bags?

I'm not familiar with those particular "micron bags" but I can say that I was my filter socks and reuse them all the time. I have Vertex Brand socks, and I would imagine you should be able to wash the eshopps ones too.

    Abiotic Precipitate in the Sandbed

I've been struggling with keeping my Alk up at target and after a week of looking I think I may have found the source. I've got rather large clumps in my sandbed and I think this may be abiotic precipitation. Parameters: Calcium: 465 (Target 465) Alk: 12 (last night) 11 (this am) (Target...

    Matt's 20 gallon long

The benefit to smaller snails is that they can fit in the nooks and crannies the larger ones cannot. You may start to get detritus build up in your rockwork if you lose all your little guys.

Newly acclimated Anthias laying on the sand

So 1 of the Anthias came out when I fed the tank, but didn't eat. The other hasn't been seen since he hid in the rockwork. So far so good... here's hoping. Thanks everyone.
