    Cleaning 5 gallon water jugs

Hello, 1st off bleach will evaporate. If you leave them air dry for a couple of days. 2nd is that you can use vinegar for a disinfectant. I use bleach for what it is worth.

All-in-one systems (Red Sea Max C-250)

They are good tanks, but there is never an all in one. Google upgrades for that tank, this should give you an answer.

For those with super old tanks....

It's been 2 years now and I haven't replaced either. So the tank is not super old. it sounds like a maintenance issue. The rocks need to be turkey basted and the gravel vacuumed once and a while.

    corals eat plastic

Hmmm. Quick, everyone jump and get rid of your plastic! I'd believe it if my tank didn't look as good as it does. Thank God I use copper lines instead of pvc. Damn you evil plastic. Anyways, welcome aboard.

    Chaeto vs sponges

I would think it's lighting. How long do you run your lighting and how much do you feed?

For those with super old tanks....

I have heard this about sand, but not on the lr. Apparently the sand can absorb so much phoshates and then can release them back into the water column. I wouldn't think so on lr, it doesn't seam like it could trap. Makes you wonder though, 7.99 a pound...

    Proper heater(s) for 75g w/sump

Correct, total water volume. The 250 is my main and the 150 is my back up. Keep in mind, double redundant system. Any quality heater will last. You just need to monitor it once and a while. Heaters should be replaced every other year. Don't buy new. There are so many folks that are into this...

    Proper heater(s) for 75g w/sump

I run a 150w and a 200w heater. I am approximately 100g of total water volume. Stay away from aquatop heaters. They are really bad. The rest are comparable. I have an apex contoller. It controls the lights, powerheads, return pump, skimmer, ato, 2 part dosing pumps, leak detector and heaters.

    Startup costs for reef tank

I spend about an hour a week. I sift the sandbed with w/c's. I would guess I spend about 40 bucks a month including food and electricity. Hard telling because everything ramps up and down depending the time of day.

Question about tank selection - bow front rimless?

I don't believe they make a 75g bow front on the first picture. I would not buy a tank ever used for fresh water because they use copper to treat fish. Not good in a reef tank. The second 72g is reef ready. It means that there is an overflow drilled inside the tank. We use another tank below...

Question about tank selection - bow front rimless?

I would do the 75g in those 2 options. Yes for fish. I have a bowfront and it can be a pain to aquascape and to clean glass. The glass cleaners are square and you have to hit the curved glass several different ways to get it clean. I would not do a bowfront again just with that. Make sure it...

    cycling aquarium question

I wouldn't do anything. Alk and cal are low because of ph. Don't scrap algae off of the silicone, leave it be. Your system is going to take longer to cycle because of being all new. It takes a long time for the rock to produce beneficial bacteria growth. It may take up to 6 weeks to cycle. The...

    Startup costs for reef tank

Yes. That is correct. My tank maintains itself. I do a 10g change 1x per week and scrape the algae every 3 days. There's different progresses, the build stage and the maintain stage. I can't fit anymore coral or fish. Once that happens, there is no more math. The year mark is the biggest...

    Startup costs for reef tank

The tank in the picture is a 72g. If you look into high end corals (the ones you can make money off of) then you are making the money back. Let's face facts, if it's not high end coral... you have a tank full of coral you have to give away. Chalice, ultra acans, millis, and acro are what's...
