Kinda like a tank, huh? ;) I'm all for DIY, but since I don't own a cnc machine I hardly see it as overpriced. If you don't have the cash, you can go get a critter keeper and some magnets and save yourself a few bucks. It'll look like hell but it's only temporary.

Depends how much volume your overflow holds vs your sump.

"water parameters are good" doesn't tell us much. Post them up. What is your maintenance regimen? Lighting schedule and type of lights? It's hard to tell you what you are doing wrong if you don't tell us what you are doing. ;)

1) If you have a fuge in your sump, i would just vacuum out the empty compartments. Get a powerhead and put a filter sock on the output of your hose. 2) You should really have a ball valve on your drain under your stand so you can cut the flow from your tank for maintenance or emergency purposes.
