Serpents are great additions, as mentioned above. Mine come out to eat when i feed the tank.

I just bought a LifeReef reactor. I've been so happy with their protein skimmer, i figure the ca rx has to be good. Just set it up today, tomorrow my solenoid/regulator will be here, and then I'll be in business.

20 is a bit high, less than 5 is started to get a bit on the low side. Try to get it down to 10 or less. If you can level out to around 4-5 that would probably be perfect. In general, much less and you may not have enough nutrients for your coral, causing pale colors. Run you skimmer, do a water...

Start with a derasa. They are the hardiest and fastest growing. As long as the tank is healthy there is no special care/feeding required.

Ditto. Reef Frenzy for the win. Every night. And the occasional cyclopeeze cubes for the filter feeders since the Reef Frenzy is so chunky and clean. Also for the filter feeders/corals i feed Oyster Feast. Sometimes i use New Era marine pellets in addition to the above. Pretty good stuff.

You would need a TON of mangrove for any kind of nutrient reduction/export. They are very slow growers. I had 50 of them growing at one time and I don't think it made any noticeable difference.

For a 12g I would just go with that neotherm mentioned above. I just got the 50w for my 8g nano i just set up. For a non-nano tank i would do multiple titanium heaters hooked up to a controller like Apex.
